How to Build A Successful Life — The Simple Formula.
ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH TO BE SUCCESSFUL?
People often talk about wanting to be successful. In most cases, they talk as if this is some sort of pipe dream. They think people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Marissa Mayer and Cheryl Sandberg all became successful because of luck, or because they were born to the right parents and went to the right schools. This, of course, is nonsense. These amazing people were not lucky or came from a different planet. These guys did something different and they did something that you and I can do too.
The good news is, to be successful is simple. The bad news is you are extremely unlikely to do it. Why? Because 99% of you are not willing to make the necessary sacrifice to achieve unimaginable success, the kind of success you dream of achieving, the kind of success Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Marissa Mayer or Cheryl Sandberg enjoy.
To be successful requires you to focus every waking minute of your day on becoming the best at what you do. It means you will not go out with your friends on a Friday night for a few drinks. It means you will not hang out on a Sunday morning with your friends in a local coffee shop chatting about how bad your boss is, or how unfair life is because your middle school friend, Nikki, is now living in a gorgeous mansion on the other side of town and driving a Concours Blue Aston Martin DB11, running a hugely successful purple inflatable frogs manufacturing business. What you will fail to mention is that your middle school friend is not with you in the coffee shop complaining about life, because she is busy living life and building her hugely successful business. She chose to create a successful life for herself, you chose to complain about how unfair life is.
Nikki spends every waking minute of her day building her business, not because she hates it, but because she loves it. She does not have time to sit down with her negative former middle school classmates talking about how unfair life is because she is building an amazing life for herself. She has chosen to sacrifice time spent with negative friends to do something about improving her life.
Most people prioritise things that bring them short-term benefits and instant gratification over the hard work and effort that will bring them long-term benefits. Successful people do not collapse onto the sofa and turn on the TV at the end of a busy, exhausting day. Successful people do things like go out for a 5-mile run, review their day and then sit down and read about how they can improve their lives. The vast majority of people are constantly seeking excuses for not doing something that would improve their lives because it is difficult. Yet the formula for building a successful life is easy, it always has been, the hard part is in the execution. To build a life of success requires a lot of sacrifices, a lot of self-discipline, consistency and hard work. Values the majority of people just do not have today.
To build a successful life for yourself, you need to know what a successful life for you would look like. Success is not really measured in terms of the money you have in your bank account, the car you drive or the house you live in. Success is much more than that. The car, the house and the money are just the decoration on top of the cake. Success is what you are creating. What you are achieving with your life. What are you building that will improve the lives of people around you? Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built a computer company that gave tools to ordinary people to create amazing things. Before Apple came along, to buy a computer was prohibitively expensive. Warren Buffett created a company that gave the opportunity to ordinary people to invest their hard earned money and make a profit. Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Warren Buffett did not build their businesses to benefit themselves alone. They built their businesses to benefit others. Their focus, their efforts and their energy went into building their businesses so they could benefit more and more people. Getting rich was just a side effect of their purpose.
So if you want to be successful, are you willing to make the necessary sacrifices? Are you willing to build something that will benefit others and not just you? Are you willing to put in every waking minute of the day into your life and to reject the negative people around you? Because if you are not prepared to do that, if you are not prepared to put in the effort, make the sacrifice day after day then you will be just like the 99% of people who fail to build a life of any purpose or meaning, spending every spare minute complaining about how unfair life is.
The choice is always yours and it really comes down to how much you want to achieve, because as a human being, no matter where you are from, what your education level is or the background you came from, you have so much potential, so much talent and so much to offer the world. You just need to decide when to stop complaining about how unfair life is and start creating a life you can be proud of, a life the world wants to see and celebrate with you. It is always your choice.
Now get off your arse and start building that life. No more excuses!
